The internet has been around since around 1950 when government research interconnected laboratories were able to pass on information to each other via the internet. This system had its glitches because the technology was not as developed as what it is today, but it certainly provided a platform for information to be transferred from one computer to another.
In the 1960’s the United States Government , together with many private sponsors worked on a system that would truly connect the world together through computers and by the 1970’s this started taking hold and gaining certain recognition from those computer boffins who knew what they were talking about, but excluded the general public who were still completely ignorant to computers and their operating systems.
In the late 1970’s early 1980’s, technology started looking more closely at this internet phenomenon and more and more people started to have these visions of what could be and would be if certain criteria or protocols were put into place, but it was only around 1990 that the boom of the internet really took place with the world getting connected, remote areas receiving signal and internet becoming available and accessible to most households. Governments and larger businesses were now already operating on this system and the general public were beginning to see the benefits of being connected.
By 2011 it was estimated that there were approximately 2 billion people using the internet which equates to approximately 31% of the world’s population.
Today this market has exploded even further with the introduction of laptops, iPads, Tablets and smart phones as now one is no longer confined to only having the internet on your desktop, but you are now able to connect no matter where you are or what you are doing.
Today we literally cannot live without the internet as we use it for gaining information by surfing the net, we use it to transfer information from one person to another, we send our correspondence via e-mail, use certain programs to stay up to date on either issues of interest or news events and we use it for entertainment.
The internet is definitely here to stay and the technology that operates this system will only get better and better as time goes by.
